General PE Games

Run The Ring

Equipment

Basketball, cones

How to play

Set up a large circle of cones approximately 15–20 metres in diameter. All players stand inside the circle. One player starts with the basketball and must dribble while attempting to tag other players with their free hand. Players inside the ring may dodge, weave, and run to avoid being tagged but cannot leave the circle of cones. If a player steps outside the cones, they are considered tagged. When a player is tagged, they collect a basketball and also become a tagger—dribbling and tagging. The game continues until all players are taggers. The last player to be tagged wins and starts as the first tagger in the next round. Taggers must maintain a legal dribble at all times—carrying or double-dribbling means that tag does not count.

Variations

Reduce the circle size as players are eliminated to keep the action intense. Require taggers to use a specific dribbling hand. Allow free players to knock the ball away from taggers to freeze them for 5 seconds. Use different types of balls (soccer, rugby) with appropriate handling rules.
