Electric Fence

An activity that never fails to improve group participation and cooperation.

Equipment

A rope

How to play

Tie the rope between two trees or poles at approximately hip height of your tallest participants (about 1m for most groups). Have your group stand together on one side of the 'electric fence' (the rope). Explain that the fence is extremely dangerous so nobody can touch it. Also stress that they cannot go under it, as there are invisible 'lasers' that will zap them. The aim is for all group members to get to the other side without anyone being 'zapped'. If the fence is touched, all group members must go back across and start again. Upon completion, facilitate a detailed discussion about the group's performance and the importance of teamwork. Facilitator tip: Some players will attempt to simply jump the fence. Rule this out early, as it defeats the purpose of the exercise. Players will hopefully figure out ways to safely assist others over, but it is crucial that you monitor safety at all times.
